City Council Candidate Bassett Attends Local Letterboxing Event

Bruce Bassett attended an event in Mercer Island’s Pioneer Park as part of National Trails Day celebrations on Mercer Island.

“Known as the “outdoor treasure hunting pastime,” letterboxing is a dynamic outdoor activity suited to all ages that combines aspects of treasure hunting with rubber stamp artistry and puzzle solving. Letterboxers hide small, weatherproof boxes in public areas such as parks and distribute clever clues to finding the box. Hunters decipher clues, search for boxes, and track their discoveries on logbooks using personalized rubber stamps.”

Bruce Bassett was on hand to participate and meet Island residents, and of course to hunt letterboxes.

For more information on letterboxing, visit Mercer Island Parks & Recreation here, or www.letterboxing.org

Council Member Bassett Joins Bike to School Day

City Council member Bruce Bassett joined West Mercer Elementary students to celebrate Bike to School Day on Friday, May 20.  Kids enjoyed snacks, drawings and the company of fellow bikers, walkers and bus commuters.    Bike to School Day is part of a focus on Healthy Ways to School, an effort supported by Bassett to encourage kids and parents to make healthy choices in how they get to school each morning.  As initiator of the Healthy Ways t0 School program, as a parent, and as Council member, Bassett has been instrumental in spearheading improvements in pedestrian and bike facilities on the island.

Sunshine and Voter Conversations at Starbucks

Several Mercer Islanders joined  me at Starbucks this morning to enjoy the sunshine and talk about community issues.  We discussed funding for education (what is the city doing to help the school district?), funding for parks (will we be able to fund park maintenance next year?), shoreline regulations (what are the hot issues right now?)  and a handful other important topics.  It was great to see the passion our citizens have for making Mercer Island the best it can be.

I’ll be out again next Thursday morning if you have questions or just want to hear about issues other folks raise.
